Anne Stagg

My paintings are stories of starting over: of a past wiped away and made to begin again. They are familiar stories that we see across the globe. We have to look no further than to displaced refugees, souring race relations, embittered culture wars, or our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet. Everywhere we look, history reveals examples of inequity, disaster, loss, and tragedy but history also gives accounts of survival, resilience, and reinvention. In Buzz Spector's essay about this work he wrote, "the whites of these paintings are less so many shrouds than they are bed linens with living limbs beneath. This is the work of survival, in which the failed erasure reminds us of the resilience of living, of a hopefulness that endures."
